Best Thing about College

Best Thing about College

What do you like most about college?

Dear Alecia,

Thanks for  your question! College has many aspects, some that are good such as getting a good grade or completing a semester, and some that are bad like studying for finals or pulling an all-nighter for a project. Nevertheless, I have to say my favorite part about college is being part of a learning community. I like the feeling of belonging to something that is bigger than myself. It’s true that at the end we are all here for our own careers and self-betterment, but it’s still nice to know that you are not alone in this process. I always like to talk to my classmates about projects, what happened in class that day, or even complain about how much work we have for the weekend, and still have that connection of being in that same college class. I think this is something you can only get and fully enjoy in college.

Financial Aid for Summer

Financial Aid for Summer

Can I apply for grants to attend school in the summer?

Dear Andrea,

Grants are a type of student financial aid that does not have to be paid back. They are awarded based on financial aid and you must file a FAFSA to be considered for them. SPC offers many type of grants. I recommend you file the FAFSA as soon as you can and sent the information to SPC, this is easy you just add SPC in the application when they ask for your school of choice (SPC’s school code is 001528).

SPC also offers many scholarships, there are foundation scholarships for the summer term too just make sure you watch out for the due dates. Usually if you need spring or summer scholarships and grants make sure you start looking for them and applying at least 3-4 months in advance, and sometimes even earlier. For example, many of the fall semester scholarship deadlines are early in the spring semester (Feb-March), some vary as it depends on the scholarship. I recommend you make an appointment with the financial aid office to verify what other financial aid, whether grants or scholarships, you are eligible for to attend school in the summer.

Dorms No, Food Yes!

Dorms No, Food Yes!

Are the dorms nice? How’s the food?

Dear Randi,

SPC does not offer student housing on campus. I wrote a post about student housing on SPC. Regarding food, most campuses have a cafeteria and there are always vending machines in almost every building. St. Petersburg/Gibbs has The Chill Grill located between the campus’ library and SS building. The cafeteria on the Seminole campus is called Oasis, which also runs the Hard Drive Cafe on the Clearwater Campus. At the Downtown campus and Epi Center yvou can find Nature’s Table which is one of my favorite healthy food restaurants. I recommend the Shanghai Chicken Salad or the California Club Sandwich.

College Students Need R&R

College Students Need R&R

Any tips on balancing school, homework, family and full time work for an adult student?

Dear Rebecca,

I have written many posts about how to successfully balance all the aspects of a student’s life. It is difficult but feasible! I’m still in school and have discovered that setting realistic goals is the way to go. Don’t stress about all the work that needs to be done. Instead, set realistic goals for yourself every day and each week. Balancing all the aspects of your life, like school, family, and work is hard and it can be a challenge to have the same priority for each. Some times you will feel that you have not done enough. Please don’t feel that way because it can only distract you. Prioritize and do what you can each and every day. And don’t forget to take care of yourself, we all need a little R&R from time to time!
