Meet Destinee!

Meet Destinee!

My name is Destinee Bullard, and I will be assisting Maria with answering some questions on this blog. I graduated in the spring of 2015 from SPC with my Associate in the Arts degree. I now am a third year student at the University of Florida studying Public Relations.

I would like to tell you all a little bit about me. I graduated from Gibbs High School where I attended the Pinellas County Center for the Arts as a theatre major. I love the arts. Acting and singing will always be two of my favorite hobbies. I also have an unconditional love for writing. I write poetry, essays, short stories and plays. I once wrote a play entitled The Courageous 12, which ended up being performed by professional actors at American Stage Theater Company in St. Petersburg. Along with acting, singing and writing, soccer has been a huge part of my life. I have played soccer since I was 6 years old. I started off playing defender and then I permanently became a goalkeeper. Family is the last thing on my list that I would like to tell you about. I love spending time with my family. My dad is actually an academic advisor at SPC on the Seminole Campus! My mom is a registered nurse at All Children’s Hospital, and I have a little brother who is a basketball and football player in high school.

SPC was a pleasure the two years that I attended. I learned so much from not only my professors but the faculty, staff and the whole SPC family. There are an endless amount of resources and opportunities for students. The thing that I love the most about SPC would have to be the endless support and guidance students are given. I have been fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to partake in an internship in Marketing and Strategic Communications in SPC’s District Office. This will give me some much needed experience in my future career field.

I have been involved in many different things at SPC. During my second semester, I was hired as a peer advisor in which my duties including assist first-time-in-college students with planning their coursework, developing a My Learning Plan, registering for classes, and informing them on different majors and degree programs. After Peer Advising, I decided to join the Seminole Campus’ Social Media Team. Being on the team gave me my first experience in the career field that I would like to pursue. After that I received my current internship! I have also been heavily involved in the Student Government Association on both the Seminole and St. Pete/Gibbs campuses.

Since graduating, I have moved to Gainesville, FL where I am working towards my Bachelor’s degree at the University of Florida. So far UF has been amazing. I am applying so much that I have learned at SPC to my work here. Can’t wait to share more of my experiences with you all!

I look forward to answering some of your questions! Ask away!

Hello from Marilyn

Hello from Marilyn

Hello my fellow SPC students. My name is Marilyn and I’ll be assisting Maria with answering questions on this blog.

Currently I’m studying in the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration under the marketing sub-plan. Also I’m interning with SPC’s Marketing and Strategic Communications department. Not to mention I’m working full-time. WOW, can you say student life overload!

So as you can see my schedule is a balancing act and I’m pretty sure yours is too. My journey at SPC is no different from anyone else with trying to figure out what career path to take. I’ve changed my major several times and within the last year I’ve decided Business Marketing is the way to go. What really helped me to narrow down my major was by looking at my personal strengths as a student and seeing how I could apply them professionally and enjoy it. Also, networking with fellow students and faculty  about their career paths gave me helpful insight about different industries. One of the wonderful things about SPC is they offer a great support system to accommodate just about everyone’s needs to make sure you’re successful.

In my free time, I enjoy all things beauty-industry related, spending time with my family and catching up on my favorite TV shows. It was great talking with you and I look forward to connecting soon. If you have any questions, I would be happy to help you along your SPC journey.

Best of Luck,

Hello world!

Hello world!

My name is Maria and, just like you are now, I was a student at St. Petersburg College. Last May, I graduated from SPC with my Associate of Arts degree. I was in the dual-enrollment program, which allowed me to take college classes while still in high school. Now, I’m a transfer student at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., studying International Relations. It is thanks to SPC, all the faculty and staff, that I am able to reach my dreams.

For the last two years, SPC has been my life! I can honestly say I spent more time on campus than in my own home.

One of the reasons why I loved being on campus so much was because of the resources available to the students. From academic tutoring and counseling, to mentoring programs and workshops, SPC can provide you with tools to succeed!

It is also a lot of fun. American writer and artist Elbert Hubbard once said, “A school should not be a preparation for life. A school should be life.” Even though schoolwork is the most important aspect, don’t think that college is all about work. There are amazing opportunities to enjoy student life in every campus.

This blog is meant to help all SPC students and others who are considering attending SPC. Going to college is a major step for anyone. You might be right out of high school. You might be coming back to college to continue your education. Or you might even be in high school and taking college classes. Knowing about the right places to study on campus, the proper classes to take and the best clubs to join can make all the difference. The goal is to have the best college experience. Truly, SPC is the best place to start. I dare you to join me as we embark together on this journey of higher education.

This blog is divided into three categories: student life, academics and need to know. I will tell you all about SPC from an insider’s perspective. I’m here to help you, give you advice and motivate you! So please, ask me your questions!

Questions & T-shirts

Questions & T-shirts

Graduate Maria Thurber can answer your questions about St. Petersburg College.

Want to know if you need a parking permit? Is tutoring really worth it? What about clubs at a particular campus and information about scholarship opportunities? Maria can tell you.

Maria was once where you are now or where you want to be, if you’re thinking about attending SPC. Take advantage of everything she learned while she was at the college before she graduated as a Gates Millennium Scholar, one of only 1,000 students chosen nationwide each year for the honor.

And, by asking your question, you can help spread the word about this resource. (Plus help others who may have been wondering the same thing.)

* The fine print

Fill in some information about yourself and answer a few questions SPC has for you. In exchange, the college will mail you a free #AskMaria T-shirt. You can submit as many questions as you want but only one T-shirt per person.

If T-shirts aren’t your thing but you still have a question for Maria, no problem. You can ask a question anonymously.

Select questions will be featured by Maria in her posts on the blog.
